File to URL or Base64: Which Format Should You Use?

Base64 is encoded file data. A Data URL combines that encoded data with the file's media type so a browser knows how to use it. They look similar, but they solve slightly different problems.

What is a Data URL?

A Data URL begins with data:, includes a media type such as image/png, and usually contains Base64 data after a comma. It can be placed directly in an HTML image source or CSS URL for a small asset.

Use the file to URL converter when the result will be used by a browser and you need a complete, self-contained value.

What is Base64?

Base64 represents binary bytes using printable text. It does not identify the original file type by itself. APIs, test fixtures, configuration files, and email formats sometimes expect raw Base64 rather than a full Data URL.

Use the file to Base64 converter when the receiving system specifically asks for Base64 text.

Important size limits

Base64 adds roughly one third to the original file size before surrounding code is counted. Large embedded assets can slow page loading, increase memory use, and make source files difficult to maintain. Normal image and download URLs are usually better for large files.

Convert without uploading

  1. Open the File to URL or File to Base64 tool.
  2. Select the local file.
  3. Let the browser encode the bytes on your device.
  4. Copy the result and test it in the system where it will be used.

Local processing is useful for private test files because the file does not need to be sent to a conversion server.
