Image Resizer and Aspect Ratio Calculator Guide

Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height. Keeping that ratio while resizing prevents faces, logos, and objects from looking stretched or squeezed.

Calculate a matching dimension

If an image is 1600 by 900 pixels, its ratio is 16:9. At 800 pixels wide, the matching height is 450 pixels. Use the aspect ratio calculator to enter the original dimensions and one desired dimension.

Common aspect ratios

1:1 is square. 4:3 is common for older photos and presentations. 16:9 is common for widescreen video. 9:16 is a vertical phone-video format. Always check the current requirements of the platform where the image will be used.

Resizing is not cropping

Resizing changes dimensions while preserving all content. Cropping removes content to create a different ratio. If the source and target ratios differ, decide whether empty space or a crop is preferable rather than stretching the image.
